Walk No 7: Llancayo
- Cold Harbour - Llandenny Walks This walk
takes you initially alongside the River Usk and then on quiet country
lanes past a few farms and hamlets. There are no pubs or toilets directly
on this route but after 5 miles a short detour of only 5 minutes takes
you to a pub with excellent food. |
Turn left out of the town
square and walk along the main road to the bridge over the river. Take
the path called "Conigar Walk" (shown in the photo) down to
the riverbank just before the bridge. (See a
photo of a commemorative plaque giving the history of the bridge and
another
explaining the origin of "Conigar Walk".)
Follow this path to the end and turn left on the Abergavenny Road. After
4 or 5 minutes take the sloping path down to the riverbank and after a
few hundred yards rejoin the main road. |
Pass the farm at Llancayo and continue through an attractive wooded valley, past a few houses and go uphill. Just after a house called 'Arosfa' stay on the main road, signposted Raglan. |
Climb the hill and pass the small Wesleyan Chapel (built in 1822). At Cold Harbour cross over the main road, taking care with regard to traffic, and take the lane signposted Llandenny. |
Pause at the top of the hill by the converted 'Big Wood Barn' to admire the fine view over the rolling countryside. A few minutes later, by looking back to the left, it is possible to see Skirrid Fawr and the top of the Sugarloaf, 2 of the 3 hills surrounding Abergavenny. Some minutes later at the crossroads take the lane on the right (not signposted to anywhere). |
After 1 mile take the left turn at the junction (near a yellow gravel bin). (NB If, instead of turning left, you continue straight on up the steep hill at this point, you will come to the Hall Inn in Gwehelog village after 5 minutes. A good selection of meals can be had here.) |
Continue along the lane for 2 miles, pass the allotments and then turn left on the main road. Follow it back to Usk centre. |

A
printed, laminated card showing this walk route, along with relevant photographs,
is available at £0.90 from the Usk Library in Maryport Street and
from the Usk Rural Life Museum in New Market Street (the road that leaves
the main road by the Police Station at the east end of the bridge over
the river). If it is more convenient, the card can be ordered by using
the Order
