Walk No 1: A short walk around Usk
(2 miles - about 35 minutes)

This short walk is ideally suited to those who are short of time or energy and gives a good impression of the main sights of the lovely town.

Leave the town square by the south east corner and proceed along Four Ash Street. A hundred yards after the bend St Mary's Church can be visited if desired.

Pass the Greyhound Inn and continue on Chepstow Road.

Climb a metal gate on the left (just before the "Shire Estates" property on the right) and cross the field on the obvious path.

Cross a stile and climb the bank to the main road.

Turn left, then immediately right (signposted Gwehelog) and first left, heading back into town.

Turn right at The Three Salmons Hotel.

Take the path via the kissing gate on the left, immediately after the entrance to the Veterinary Centre.

Follow the riverbank path ("Conigar Walk") to join the road at the end of the bridge. (See a photo of a commemorative plaque giving the history of the bridge and another explaining the origin of "Conigar Walk".)

Cross over the main road and go down New Market Street.

Turn left at the bottom and immediately right into Mill Street.

Turn left at the bottom and left again on to the main road (Maryport Street). (In Summer the large garden directly opposite ("Courtlands") has a splendid display.)

Pass the prison and turn right at the One Stop supermarket. Follow this back to the town square.

A printed, laminated card showing this walk route, along with relevant photographs, is available at £0.90 from the Usk Library in Maryport Street and from the Usk Rural Life Museum in New Market Street (the road that leaves the main road by the Police Station at the east end of the bridge over the river). If it is more convenient, the card can be ordered by using the Order Form.
