Paul Flannery

Paul Flannery

Paul Flannery was born on the 9th of May 1947. He was raised in London where he showed his musical talent at an early age, performing in the choir and orchestra at his school near the Oval in London. He was a choirboy at Southwark Cathedral, West London for four years. He soon discovered the delights of more secular musical pursuits, playing the organ with High Tension, a seven piece soul band. From there he graduated to playing local folk clubs, developing his singing and playing style. He was a founder member of folk band Heritage, a successful four part harmony group. The band sang in a number of clubs and enjoyed a 2 year residency at Dingles. Here he enjoyed rubbing shoulders with many of the great and good at the time including Peter Bellamy and June Tabor.

In 1986 Paul moved to West Yorkshire where he took up with Dave Mallinson's Ceilidh Band. Whilst playing in a pub one night, he was unfortunate enough to fall in with bad company and, before he knew what was happening, he had made the fatal mistake of agreeing to stand in with John Birkby's band, Aiken's Drum. He played his first booking with the band on the 8th of July 1990 and 22 years later he is still to be seen in the line-up! Paul's easy playing style and sympathetic harmonies form an intrinsic part of the band's distinctive character. He plays a Yamaha PR80 electric piano which gives him the sound he favours, although the band and roadies generally agree that it weighs so much he might as well play a real one!

In addition to his playing and singing, Paul is a trained piano tuner and is in great demand for his skills in mending ailing squeeze boxes.
